Winterise Your Caravan Like a Pro: Essential Tips for the Winter

As winter falls upon us, it is important to prepare your caravan for the colder months – especially if you’re not travelling all year round! Taking the right steps will ensure your caravan stays protected and ready for adventures in the new year ahead. Whether you’re a first-time caravanner or a seasoned pro, these tips will help keep your caravan in top condition for when winter passes.

Don’t miss your last chance to explore our Winter Warmers seasonal offers across all caravans, whether you’re embracing winter adventures or gearing up for new year journeys!

Empty out all water

To prevent unwanted frost-related damage, it is crucial to empty all of the water from its systems. Freezing temperatures can cause any remaining water to expand, leading to cracked pipes and tanks – repairs that can be inconvenient and costly to repair.

Once all the water has been drained, leave all taps open to allow air circulation, lift all drain valves and if possible, detach the shower hose.

Extra tip: Remove any in-line water filters as these are also susceptible to freezing.

Protect the interior

Before storing your caravan, give the interior a thorough clean. Vacuum the floors, wipe down surfaces and wash where needed – leaving your caravan fresh and ready for spring!

To protect the interior during winter it is important to stop any moisture from creeping which can cause mould and unpleasant odors. Remove all food from the kitchen to deter pests, and leave the fridge door ajar to prevent unwanted odors and mould. Leave cupboards and wardrobes ajar to promote airflow, and store fixed beds in an upright position. Stand cushions upright to improve air circulation, or better yet, store them in a warm, dry place. Don’t leave anything damp inside.

Allowing fresh air to flow through your caravan can help, so open windows or rooflights when you’re home and can monitor them. Avoid leaving windows open overnight or whilst away!

Extra tip: If possible, run the heating on a low setting every now and then. This is one of the best ways to prevent dampness and condensation.

Protect the exterior

Protecting the exterior of your caravan is just as important as protecting the interior during the winter months. Rain, frost, and dirt can all take a toll on your caravan’s exterior. Start by inspecting your caravan’s bodywork for any damage. Give your caravan a thorough wash, apply protective wax to prevent algae and dirt buildup, and use a  breathable winter proof cover to shield from harsh weather. This will keep your caravan clean and ready for the spring.

Think carefully about where you will store your caravan – whether you can store indoors or outdoors, and once in storage pay attention to the tyres. Consider turning the wheels periodically, or elevate them to prevent flat areas.

Extra tip: Opt for caravan friendly shampoos, waxes and cleaning products to prevent any unwanted damage to surfaces.

Look after your leisure battery

Cold weather drains batteries more quickly when not in use, and a completely discharged battery can lose its ability to hold a charge permanently. To prolong its lifespan, disconnect your caravan’s leisure battery and recharge it occasionally.

If you can, storing the battery indoors in a garage or shed allows easy access for charging and will protect it from freezing temperatures. When you remove the battery, wipe it with a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove any dirt and debris, and inspect for any signs of damage.

Extra tip: Invest in a battery monitor to help track your battery charge level and health and monitor voltage levels.

We hope our list has helped you prepare your caravan for the winter. Proper winter maintenance will protect your caravan, keeping it in top condition ready for when the warmer weather returns. With peace of mind knowing your caravan is well-maintained, you can relax and enjoy the festive season, knowing that your home on wheels will be prepped and ready for your next adventure!
