There’s nothing quite like the freedom of travelling in your own motorhome. Whether that’s travelling around the UK, exploring our beautiful countryside and city attractions, or you’re thinking about taking your motorhome even further by venturing into Europe to discover more stunning locations.

From breathtakingly beautiful mountains to beaches with the clearest water, there’s a huge variety of destinations to choose from. Europe is bursting with a plethora of cultures, cuisines, nature and much more, making your road trip totally unforgettable!

Where should you go in Europe?

Europe is home to vibrant cities, white-sand beaches, and amazing mountains so you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice. In your motorhome, you’ll even be able to see more remote places that you wouldn’t be able to if you were flying straight to the capital city.

For stunning views of the Amalfi Coast, drive through Italy’s Sorrento Peninsula, here you can plan to stop at pretty towns and enjoy some Italian cuisine. Depending on how long you’re going away, here are some magical places to try out in Italy – Tuscany for wine lovers, Florence, Sicily, Stelvio Pass and Lake Como.

In France, we recommend the Alps, the French Riviera and Saint-Tropez. Of course, there are plenty of other destinations just a Google search away, so pick a place that suits you and your family most.

Make sure to plan your route using a sat nav, Google Maps or a handy online route planner like this. Planning where to go and where to stop will make your journey much more enjoyable, knowing all the planning is done in advance. For some more incredible routes, click here.

Basic requirements

While it’s exciting to plan all the experiences of your trip, it’s also important to ensure you’ve read the rules and restrictions of the country you’re going to. Here are a few tips:

  • Make sure your servicing and MOT are kept up to date.
  • Passports must have a minimum of six months’ validity and be less than 10 years old. If you’re holidaying in Ireland, your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay.
  • You can stay in the EU for 90 days within a 180-day period unless you have a visa.
  • Ensure your motorhome insurance policy covers Europe travel – 3rdparty insurance at a minimum.
  • Get travel insurance and breakdown cover that includes breakdowns on the campsite.
  • Display a UK sticker on the rear of your motorhome if your number plate doesn’t include a UK identifier, these are £1.50 at post offices and garages (this is not needed for travel in Ireland).
  • Read the food and drink restrictions for your country.

What are the rules for taking your pet to Europe?

It’s never fun to leave your furry friend behind but with motorhome trips, you can take your pets with you (depending on the campsite you stay at), just make sure to check with your vet to discuss.

Pets do need documentation to be able to travel – you’ll need an animal health certificate (AHC), proof of their microchip and rabies vaccination. If you’re travelling to Norway, Ireland, Finland, or Northern Ireland, you’ll also need to show proof that your pet has had tapeworm treatment.

The AHC must be valid for four months for travelling in the EU and four months for entering the United Kingdom on the way back. This should be attained no more than 10 days before your departure. Check the gov.uk website for more info.

If you’re taking pet food into the EU, there are also rules and only limited quantities of pet food are allowed so be wary! Please also check the country’s specific measures before departure.

Before departing, always check the latest advice, vaccine, and visa requirements for your country of choice. Apart from that, we hope you have an excellent trip in Europe with your motorhome!
